CommunicAide enables persons with aphasia and other speech impairments to communicate needs, wants, and feelings.

Hope4Speech

CommunicAide is customizable AAC app for iPad designed by Hope4Speech for persons with aphasia and other disabilities, including apraxia, dementia, and Neurologically impaired speech.

The app’s tap-to-voice design helps users communicate needs and feelings in different settings by combining a large image library, text-to-speech, and the ability to customize content with one’s own text, pictures, and voice.

You can download a free version of CommuicAide on iTunes. A Professional version costs $69.99.

Hope4Speech CommunicAide Features

Unique features include a pop out Body Chart and Pain meter that has made the app sucsful in a variety of settings, including clinics, critical care units, skilled nursing facilities, and at home. Other features include:

Using Hope4Speech CommunicAide

As with most AAC apps, CommunicAide presents categories with corresponding photos and/or phrases that users select to form sentences and questions.

The app has 7 basic categories located on the right side of the screen:

  1. Family
  2. Food
  3. Recreation
  4. Health
  5. Clothing
  6. Daily Living
  7. Emotions.

Each category has photos and audio recordings of commonly needed items.

To select a category, tap its corresponding button, which will be highlighted in blue.
The photos and audio are displayed in the middle part of the screen.

On the left of the screen are commonly used phrases and questions. CommunicAide can speak aloud any sentence you create using text-to-speech. Tap the “Play” button to hear an item or your sentence read aloud.

You can save your favorite phrases, sentences, and questions. Once a sentence is created and its words are displayed in the Sentence Tray at the bottom of the screen, just tap the “Add to Favorites” star icon.

To view favorites, tap the “Favorites” button at the top right of the screen. A window will open.

To delete an item, swipe on it from left to right. Tap “History” in the upper left corner of the screen to view recently used favorites.

How to Customize CommunicAide Settings

To customize CommunicAide, tap the “Settings” button in the upper right corner of the screen. You can tap to select either a male or female text-to-speech voice and turn the “Tap to Play” control on or off. You can choose how many columns you want displayed and turn the edit mode on or off.

“Tap to Play” reads items aloud as they are chosen.

Columns: 2 or 3; the 2-column setting shows four photos at a time; the 3-column setting displays 9 at a time.

CommunicAide Detailed Body Chart

The Detailed Body Chart enables users to identify the location of pain anywhere in their body.

Tap the blue Body Chart button to open it. Tap the diagram to select the appropriate area of the body. Communicaide will automatically speak the name of that body part.

Use the slider to rate pain on a scale of 1-10. You select the appropriate sex of the chart in settings.

CommunicAide Edit Mode

The “Edit Mode” is where users customize each category. To enter Edit Mode, tap its button under “Settings.” An “Edit Mode” indicator button will appear the top of the screen.

Activating this mode places an “Add More” frame in each category. To add something, tap the “Add More” frame. An “Add Item” window will appear.

To add an item, click inside the “Description” box. Your device’s keyboard will appear. Give your entry a name.

To add audio, tap the red “Record” button. Press “Play” to hear your words played back to you.

To add images, you can either select from your device’s picture library or take pictures from within the app using its built-in camera. Once an image is selected, click “Use” at the top right of the screen to verify your choice and then “Save.” The newly created item will appear at the top of the selected category’s library.

To delete a custom item, tap the item while in edit mode. In the “Edit Item” screen, tap the red “Delete” button at the bottom of the screen.

Preprogrammed items cannot be deleted, but they can be moved while in edit mode.

Turn “Edit Mode” when you’re finished editing.
