To install Dragon Dictate on your Mac, insert the application CD into your machine's optical drive and double-click on the disk icon.
If you downloaded the software from the web, locate the Dragon_Dictate.dmg disk image file on your desktop and double-click on it.
The Dragon Dictate splash screen appears.
Drag the Dictate icon to your applications folder. Then, open the folder and double-click on the Dragon Dictate icon to launch the application and begin the installation process.
You'll be prompted to insert the Dragon Data disk. If necessary, eject the application CD, insert the data disk, and click "OK." If you've downloaded Dragon, double-click on the Dragon_English_Data.dmg disk image file.
Close the splash screen and click "OK."
Dragon will begin copying data from the Data disk. This can take several minutes, depending on the operating system installed on your Mac.
When copying is complete, eject the Data disk and store it in a safe place.
Ejecting the Data disk brings up the software license agreement screen. Review the licensing agreement and click "Accept" to continue.
Next, you'll be prompted to register your copy of Dragon Dictate.
Click "Register this Software," fill out the form -- including your 16-character registration code located on the application disk envelope -- and click "Register Now."
Dragon Dictate requires users to register their software within four days following launch.
Once your software is registered, Dragon Dictate automatically takes you to the first screen of the Profile Creation Wizard.
Creating a profile teaches Dragon how to understand your vocal tendencies to make dictation more effective.
The five-minute process requires reading onscreen text aloud till the application has enough data to recognize your voice.
To create your profile, follow the onscreen prompts. Choose a profile name and specify where you'd like it stored.
Select the USB microphone from the list of options in the Microphone field at the top of the next screen. You can also configure your iPhone as a remote mic.
Select your spelling preference (US or UK) and accent from the Accent field.
Once Dragon has your initial profile data, it will calibrate your microphone's volume setting.
Click the microphone icon so the red stop-sign symbol turns green and then read the text that appears onscreen in a clear, natural voice.
Once volume calibration is complete, voice training begins. During this phase, you read a story for a few minutes so Dragon can match your pronunciation to the words that appear onscreen.
Read exactly what appears, including the words for punctuation spelled out in capital letters, e.g. COMMA, PERIOD.
Words turn green once Dragon recognizes them. If the text turns red, the program is asking you to read them again.
Dragon ends the training when it has heard enough to create your profile.
You are now ready to start dictating.
Though simple, the steps for installing Dragon and creating a profile automatically follow one another. Budget sufficient time and energy to ensure best results.
Dictation is an acquired skill, so plan on doing additional voice training included in the program once you start using Dragon.
